Australia Week in Moscow May 2005 Australia Week in Moscow, a business exposition held in Radisson-Slavyanskaya hotel 10-15 May was also of interest for wine professionals. It featured several wine stands.
Svarog importer chose to remind us of a well-known Hardys label. Alcoholic drinks magnate Pernod Ricard showcased one of the most promoted Australian wine brands, Jacobs Creek. Its Russian launch is expected this summer.
Penmara Wines should be mentioned among the producers seeking exposure on the Russian market. It is a young winery founded 5 years ago by 5 owners of family vineyards. They are located in the north-eastern part of the country in cool-climate Hunter Valley and Orange. The main focus lies on production of high quality wines from low-yielding vineyards. At present Penmara Wines makes 30,000 cases a year. Main varieties are Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz. The list also includes Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and others.
There are three ranges Yatalla Creek, 5 Families and Reserve. Yatalla Creek is a lifestyle brand aimed at a common consumer. Bright labels with aboriginal design and well made, understandable wines from popular grapes. 5 Families and Reserve feature more individual styles with really standing out Penmara Reserve MCP, which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with beautiful perfumed aromatics and a harmonious structure. All Penmara Wines have excellent acidity and are meant to be drunk with food.
The exposition also featured a master class on Australian wines. It was run by an Australian wines authority Jim McMahon.
I cant help but mention a wonderful Aboriginal show that was a real highlight of the Australian event.
