inAnteprima: Italian en primeur
«Magnum» ¹10(12) 2006

inAnteprima: Italian en primeurWineTip, a wine trading company based in Milan specializes in fine wines of Italy and the world.

It is one of the few commercial structures that works on the futures market for Italian wines. Every year WineTip invites leading Italian and international experts to taste the latest vintage. Their verdict influences final futures prices for the top wines of Piedmont, Tuscany and the rest of Italy. This year Eleonora Scholes was among the invited tasters.

inAnteprima format is borrowed from Bordeaux primeur. Its main goal is to set a mechanism of futures sales for fine Italian wines, like it is done in Bordeaux. Criteria of selection include producer’s historic reputation, proven quality of wines, market demand and general pricing policy of the wine estate. “This sales concept successfully works in France. We see no reason why 5-10% of top Italian wines can’t be sold through this scheme”, says Mako Onfermann, WineTip president.

inAnteprima tasting was launched in 2004. Started as an initiative for home market, it now gained critical mass and is ready for foreign expansion. Next year the offers will be open for the US market, and WineTip will become the first full-fledged Italian courtier.

inAnteprima 2006 featured 26 wines — 10 Piedmont’s, 12 Tuscan (of them 6 Brunello di Montalcino) and 4 from other regions of central and southern Italy. The tasting was held blind. Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli was leader of the general tasting. The top ten list featured mainly wines of Piedmont (7). The other three were Tuscan — two from Montalcino and one from Bolgheri.
