Vintage-1999: Burgundy and Barolo

Grand Jury Europeen has published results of recent sessions dedicated to wines of Burgundy and Barolo-1999.

These tastings were probably one of the most memorable in the 10-year history of the jury. “The session of pure emotions”, “the apotheosis of Burgundy” — that’s how president Francois Mauss described it. Of 50 wines 33 were Grand Cru, 12 — Premier Cru. Clos de Vougeot GC from Domaine Denis Mortet was rated first in a general ranking table. The wines of the estate are among the few that regularly receive approval and high marks by the members of the jury. The round of applause deserves also Gros Frere & Soeur with three wines in the first position of the rating. La Tache was too young and austere this time which was reflected in the evaluation. Special mention goes to several Premier Cru wines — Chambolle-Musigny “La Combe d’Orveau”(Domaine Henri Perrot-Minot), Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux (Domaine Guillard), Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot (Bouchard) and village Gevrey-Chambertin “Coeur de Roy” (Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py), all of which performed better than some Grand Cru examples.

Like wines of Burgundy, Barolo-1999 were of “exceptional quality”, according to Mauss. After the tasting of 60 samples it appeared that the traditional and modern wines were not so different in style after all. It is obvious that some were marked by pronounced oak or big concentration, however Barolo terroirs shone triumphantly in the majority of the wines. It was the case when communes rather than individual producers competed with one another. From this point of view the advantage was with the terroirs of Monforte d’Alba (4 wines in the top ten). Nonetheless, the refinement of Barolo, the sumptuousness of La Morra and the power of Castiglione Falletto superbly showed various sides of Barolo character. “Superb definition of the appellation, terroirs, styles and vignerons working with passion” — was the way Francois Mauss summed up the Piedmont’s tasting.
