New forces support protection of origin April 2007 Six renowned wine production zones have recently joined the alliance that supports wine protection of origin. In July 2005 producers of Champagne, Port and Jerez together with winemakers from the Napa Valley, Oregon and Washington state signed a joint declaration to emphasize the importance of appellations and the need to protect wine names by origin. The main idea of the document is that the label must correspond to the content of the bottle. The declaration states that “wine, more than any other beverage, is valued based on its association to its place of origin and with good reason… the names of these places are familiar, and synonymous with quality”. Several weeks ago representatives of another six leading wine areas of the world Sonoma County and Paso Robles in California, Chianti Classico in Italy, Tokaj in Hungary and Victoria and Western Australia in Australia put their signatures on the document. Consumers anywhere in the world can also support the initiative by registering on the website www.protectplace.com.
